What is ‘flour sack’?

A flour sack towel, also known as a tea towel, is a type of kitchen towel typically woven from pure cotton or linen and can stand up to any task. Soft, highly absorbent, and quick-to-dry flour sack towels have helped people around the world with their household chores since the 1800s. Back then, staples like grains and flour used to be wrapped up in tightly woven sacks made of cotton.

Over time, people got more creative with these versatile dish towels, using them during cooking, cleaning, quilting, stitching, and much more.

What are the benefits to using a flour sack towel?

  • Reusable and washable

  • Free of chemicals

  • Safe around food and people

  • Soft & thin

  • Absorbent & quick drying

  • Lint free

What can flour sack cloths be used for?

General house cleaning chores such as; drying dishes, hands, and vegetables/fruit; wiping down surfaces; cleaning; dusting; cleaning windows; etc. Great for food preparation, such as making cheese and proofing dough. Serving foods by keeping baked goods like muffins and rolls warm and fresh. Gift wrap is another creative use! Table or food display accent, too. As well, MAUVE designs will work as a wall hanging!

Will they stain?

100% cotton and other like natural fibers will stain. However, if you have some hard strains, pour baking soda directly on the wet stain and let it sit. Make sure to attack wine or sauce stains immediately since they are hard to get out.

How are they washed?

The towels and napkins can be machine washed and dried. We recommend a cold wash for colorfast and fabric longevity. Refrain from using fabric softener, or bleach for stain removal, because these products may impair the cloths high quality structure.

The best way to whiten towels is to use white vinegar or non-chlorine bleaches made with hydrogen peroxide. This is not only better for the towels themselves but also for the environment.

Do you use ink or dye?

We use non-toxic, water based screen printing fabric ink that is diluted with water. The ink is cured and heat set as you would with a screen printed design on a t-shirt. The ink will not run! Note: the color may soften after several washes (especially if you use hot water).
